— every group chat, since 2018

Rate to curate

Discover hidden gems you may have missed. Every rating you log sharpens your taste map — so the next film you scroll past might just be the one you've been waiting for.

Build your squad

Bought all the tickets for the group? Fan them out to your crew in one tap — every mate gets their own digital stub with venue, seat, barcode and showtime, plus a "So you just saw…" rating prompt the moment the credits roll. Shared watchlists let everyone drop films in. Crew ratings show up under every film, and comments on every review keep the post-cinema debrief going long after the credits.

Keep every ticket

Every cinema night, perfectly preserved. Flip back six months and remember the seat you sat in, the date you went, the mate who came along. Year-end Wrapped uses every stub to build the recap — so every ticket is one more memory you'll get back later.

A QUICK LOOK

Your movie life, in one tap.

Hot films, your monthly stats, the stuff you said you'd watch (no judgement). Everything on one screen — no doom-scrolling, no review-bombing, no random Marvel suggestions.

BUILT FOR

Built for all types of movie lovers.

The hardcore cinephile

Eight categories per film. Quarter-star precision. A "Cringe Factor" for the ones that genuinely deserve it. Score films the way they deserve to be scored. Insights decodes your taste by decade, genre and director. Wrapped recaps the year. Letterboxd import drops your history straight in.

The casual viewer

One tap, one rating. See what your mates thought without committing to a film-school dissertation. Quick-search anything you've seen recently, flip through your Watched list, vote yes or no on the next movie night. Easy as.

The fad follower

Big release weekend? You'll know about it. Coming to Screens shows what's hitting cinemas day-by-day. Snap your ticket on the way in and your cinema log builds up an "I was there" record of every Marvel midnight, every Dune opener, every blockbuster that mattered.

The film snob

Eight-category ratings for the films nobody else has seen yet. Drop a detailed take in the comments under each rating — your crew's the first to hear about the South Korean thriller, the Romanian drama, the documentary nobody's caught onto yet. Find your taste matches by handle, not by algorithm.

FEATURES

Everything your film-obsessed group chat needs.

Eight bits, one app. All built around one idea — movies are better with mates.

RATE

One number isn't a rating.

IMDb gave Tenet a 7.4 — what does that even mean? Score films across eight categories: storyline, look, acting, soundtrack, sets, fun, originality and effects. Quarter-stars when you're feeling picky. There's even a "Cringe Factor" for the ones that genuinely deserve a smackdown. Finally, a review that says something.

SEARCH

One bar. Anything you want.

Search a film, a mate, or a screen — all from one bar at the top of Home. Films pull from TMDB and your library at the same time, mates surface by @handle, and any app destination (Squad, Wrapped, Cinemas, Insights, whatever) is one tap away. Type two words and find what you mean.

  • Any film — TMDB + your watched, watchlist, and drafts in one result list
  • Any mate — @handle lookup with avatars + live activity dots
  • Any screen — jump to Squad, Wrapped, Insights, Coming Up, anywhere
  • Smart suggestions — picks tuned to your taste as you type
SQUAD

Followers aren't friends.

Letterboxd has fans you've never met. moviemates.social has the four mates you actually go to the cinema with. Add them by @handle, see what they rated, share tickets, drop comments under each other's reviews. The Squad Activity feed collects every rating, comment and shared ticket in one place so nothing slips by. Real connections, no vanity metrics.

SQUAD NUDGES

Nudge a mate to share their take.

Saw a film with your mates last weekend and they still haven't logged a rating? Give them a friendly nudge. They'll get a little card at the top of their Squad tab with a "Review now" button that drops them straight into the rating screen — no chasing in the group chat, no "remind me later" guilt trip. The films you saw together actually get reviewed.

SQUAD POLLS

Democracy, but for movie night.

You've picked the film — now put the session to a vote. Find showtimes by chatting in plain English ("Saturday evening at Hoyts, nothing too late"), set polling day on a calendar, narrow by AM/PM or cinema chain, and add the front-runners to the ballot. In a hurry? Quick poll calls a snap election on tonight's soonest sessions. The squad votes, the majority rules, and the winning session takes office — saved straight to your tickets in a tap. No hanging chads, no group-chat filibuster over which screening.

moviemates.social propose-a-poll screen — Step 1 picks the film (Scary Movie), Step 2 'Add cinemas + times' shows the 'Day for the poll' calendar chips (Today/Tomorrow/Fri/Sat/Sun), an 'Auto-fetch sessions for today' button, a 'Find & filter sessions by chat' conversational button, and a 'Quick poll — soonest sessions today' button, with Paste/Scan backstops below
FIND A SESSION

Ask what's on. Book in two taps.

Open any film and see real cinema sessions near you — pulled live from Google, not a stale listings feed, so indie, festival and mainstream all show up. Want to narrow it? Just say so: "tonight after 8, IMAX only" or "Saturday arvo close by". An ASAP card surfaces the soonest showing — cinema, screen format, price — and one tap drops you on the cinema's own booking page.

CINEMA DEALS

Never pay full price at the movies.

We scan every chain's deals — cheap days, member prices, each chain's movie of the week — and line them up in one live list. Hoyts, Event, Village, Palace, Dendy, all in one place. Hit refresh for today's prices, spot the cheapest session, and tap straight through to booking. No more checking five cinema sites to find out it's $26 a ticket.

TICKETS

Letterboxd remembers the film. We remember the seat.

Snap a paper ticket, paste a cinema email, or drag a PDF — the app reads the film, venue, showtime, seat and barcode straight off the photo and rebuilds the whole night as a digital keepsake. Every Hoyts midnight, every Event opener, every Palace late-night, filed and searchable forever. The crumpled stub in your jacket pocket finally has a home.

DISCOVER NEW FILMS

Just tell us what you're in the mood for.

A real conversation, not a form. Tell us what you want in plain English — "something like Sicario but funny", "a film for after a tough day", "a date-night thriller that's not too dark" — and we chat it through with you, picks pulled from YOUR taste profile, never something you've already seen. @mention a mate and we fold their taste in too.

CINEMAS

Stop checking five cinema websites.

Hoyts, Event, Village, Palace, Dendy — every cinema in your area, in one timeline. Visited ones get a green tick. Your mates pop up under each venue. A quiet memory of which films you've seen and where — handy when you can't remember if you watched Dune at Hoyts or the local indie.

SHARED LISTS

More than a movie list.

Wanted to watch a saga for years but never knew where to start? Just ask — moviemates lines up the whole thing in order, drops it into a shared list your crew builds together, and keeps your place so you never miss a scene or lose track. Letterboxd logs films. We get you watching.

RECAP

Forgot where you left off? We didn't.

Pick a film back up and moviemates shows you exactly where you were — your elapsed time, plus a spoiler-free recap of everything that's happened up to that point (and nothing past it). No rewinding to remember who's who, no "wait… what's going on again?" Just pick up and keep watching.

LETTERBOXD IMPORT

Letterboxd brought you here. We'll keep you here.

Bring 500 films across in 60 seconds — ratings, watchlist, the lot. Smart matching handles the tricky ones: foreign titles, same-name films, weird year mismatches. Then try the features Letterboxd doesn't have: Squad Polls, ticket scanning, Squad Activity, cinema tracking. By week two, you won't be looking back.

What people are saying.

"Finally, Letterboxd for people who actually go to the cinema with friends."

— @sam, beta tester

"The 'What To Watch' for groups solved our 45-minute Netflix scrolling problem."

QUESTIONS

The stuff you'd want to know.

Is it really free?

While moviemates.social is in beta, every feature is free — rating, mates, ticket scanning, Discover new films, Wrapped, Insights, the lot. It's not free indefinitely; once we're out of beta we'll likely add some paid extras for the power users. The core day-to-day stuff stays free either way.

Do I need to download anything?

Nope. It runs in any modern browser, and you can hit "Install" to pop it onto your home screen so it acts just like a normal app. No App Store, no Play Store, no waiting around for a download.

What about my data?

Your reviews are yours. We don't sell a thing. Only two outside services touch the app — Firebase (handles the plumbing) and TMDB (where the movie info comes from). Delete your account and we wipe everything.

Can I bring my Letterboxd history with me?

Yep. Drop in your Letterboxd CSV export and we'll match up to 500 films in seconds. Even handles the tricky stuff — foreign titles, films with the same name, weird year mismatches.

How does the ticket scanning actually work?

Snap a photo of a paper ticket, paste a Hoyts / Event / Village email, or drag a PDF onto the screen. We read the film, venue, seat, screen, price and barcode straight off it, then turn the whole thing into a digital keepsake card — barcode and all.

What's the cheapest day to see a movie?

In Australia it's almost always Tuesday. moviemates.social pulls the latest cheap movie ticket days from a live web search — Hoyts Cheap Tuesday (from $13.50), Event Half Price Tuesday, Village Vrewards Super Tuesday, Dendy Budget Tuesday (from $10) and Palace Royal Discount (Mon & Tue, from $12) — so you can see what's cheap at the cinema tonight in one tap. Always confirm the final price on the cinema's own site before you go.

Who built this thing?

Made with love in Melbourne by Kim Routley. A solo passion project that grew into the social movie app I wished already existed.

MADE BY HAND

Hi, I'm Kim.

moviemates.social is a solo passion project, built one feature at a time from my apartment in Melbourne. No funding round, no growth team, no engagement targets — just me and a list of every annoying thing about the film apps I was already using.

It started as a way to settle arguments with mates about who liked what. Then it ate my ticket-scanning ritual. Then it ate my Letterboxd. Now it's the social movie app I always wanted to exist.

If you've got a feature request, a bug, or just want to tell me what film you saw last night — drop me a line. Every email gets read by an actual person (me) and the good ones usually ship within a week.
